Hypertension
Hypertension is persistently elevated arterial blood pressure. Thresholds differ by guideline: Australian guidelines define it as clinic BP ≥140/90 mmHg, while US guidelines use ≥130/80.
Common symptoms
- Elevated arterial blood pressure, It's largely asymptomatic until it causes damage, which is why it gets called a silent killer. Sustained high pressure damages arteries and the organs they supply, leading to stroke, coronary disease and MI, heart failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney disease, retinopathy, vascular dementia, and aortic aneurysm or dissection. It's one of the largest single contributors to global cardiovascular death
Mechanisms
There is no single identifiable cause; driven by genetics, age, obesity, high sodium intake, low potassium, alcohol, inactivity, and stress.
Associated modalities
- homeopathy
